01 · The box
Cedar, three-quarters of an inch thick.
Dovetail joints at every corner, so the box holds square when it's rained on, sun-baked and then rained on again. The whole hive is dipped in beeswax rather than painted: it sheds water and smells like home to a colony.
02 · The frames
Ten frames, foundations already waxed.
Ten cedar frames with black foundations coated in beeswax, the coating that gets a new colony drawing comb instead of sulking. Black foundation also makes eggs easier to spot when you inspect.
03 · The window
A window you slide open.
An acrylic pane behind a wooden shutter on the long side. Slide the shutter, watch the colony, slide it shut. You will look every day the first month; the bees won't mind, because you never lifted the lid.

Every lid you lift costs the colony a day.
Opening a hive breaks the propolis seal, drops the brood temperature and puts every bee on alert. New beekeepers open far too often because they're worried. The window lets you be worried without doing damage: check the cluster, check that comb is being drawn, and leave the lid alone until inspection day.

Before you order.
Is this a complete hive?
The Deep is a complete brood box: box, ten frames, foundations, window. It is the part of a hive the colony lives in. You'll also want a bottom board, an inner cover and an outer (telescoping) cover, which are standard 10-frame Langstroth parts and available from any bee supply store. We'll add them here when we can ship them from the US as fast as the boxes.
Does it come assembled?
No. The box arrives flat with its dovetails cut and takes three steps: knock the corners together, nail the frames and base, fit the acrylic window. A hammer and half an hour. Assembling it yourself is also why it ships free in a carton you can carry.
Why a deep box?
Most US beekeepers run one or two deeps for brood and stack shallower boxes on top for honey. The deep is the box the colony lives in, so it's the one to start with; when eight of the ten frames are drawn and covered in bees, you add a second box on top from any 10-frame Langstroth supplier.
Where do the bees come from?
A local apiary, as a nucleus colony ("nuc") or a package. They sell out over winter and are picked up in spring, so order the bees now and the box now, and let the box wait in the garage.
Why US only?
The boxes are stocked in a US warehouse and go out by FedEx in two to five days, and that speed is baked into the price. Beeswax-coated hive parts also run into biosecurity rules at some borders. So for now: US addresses, USD, no surprises at customs.
What if it arrives damaged, or I change my mind?
Email us a photo and we replace damaged parts or the whole box. Otherwise you have 30 days from delivery to return an unassembled kit in its carton for a full refund; we send the return label. Once it's nailed together and the bees are in, it's yours.
